AJ Sports Academy · Founder essay
Making junior tennis more accessible — without losing structure
Affordability and structure should be considered together. A lower entry cost is useful only if a player also understands what the opportunity involves.
Start with a clear opportunity
As the founder of AJ Sports Academy, I see access as more than a price question. A junior player and their family need enough information to decide whether an event or programme is right for them. The academy's work includes structured development, tournaments and match-play opportunities.
Before committing to any junior tennis opportunity, ask about the intended playing level, the format, the expected time at the venue and how matches or sessions are organised. A clear format helps a family distinguish purposeful practice from simply spending more time on court.
Compare the full cost, not just the headline fee
An affordable opportunity should be assessed in context. The entry fee is only one part of the decision; court charges, travel, equipment and time can also matter. Ask what is included, whether there are additional costs and what happens if a session or event changes.
This is a design priority, not a claim that the academy is the cheapest option or that every family will face the same costs. Transparent information makes comparison possible.
Give match play a purpose
Structure does not have to mean complexity. A player can go into a session with one focus — for example, returning consistently or choosing when to approach the net — and review it afterwards. A simple question such as “What will I work on next time?” can connect match play with the next practice session.
Parents and players can ask how an opportunity complements existing coaching, rather than treating it as a replacement. The aim is an understandable path between practice and competition, without promising results that have not been measured.
